Grande Eleos Floats on Water

One year after being commissioned by the founder and CEO of CJX Holdings, Grande Eleos has been installed at the collector's private residence in Jupiter Island, FL. Positioned atop a 100-foot reflecting pool, the eight-foot high sculpture, carved from a 28-ton block of Italian Bardiglio Marble, is an awe inspiring focal point amidst the ocean front landscape.

When creating Grande Eleos, Erdman wanted to incorporate abstract qualities of the ocean - it's sometimes subtle, sometimes fierce nature. The result of such a concept is a lyrical form that expresses movement, as well as stillness while it sits on the reflective water; it beckons attention, yet instills calm to all who gaze upon it.

Erdman felt a sense of astonishment as the 3,000 pound sculpture, a culmination of a year's work, was set as the grand centerpiece on a pool of water that stretches out to an ocean panorama. Inspired by the timelessness of a material that was once very much alive, Erdman reflects upon this distinct and inspiring form, "It has a very meditative quality. The sculpture takes on the softness of the water and, in turn, we experience sublime beauty and peace." Grande Eleos stands out among Erdman's body of work, as he introduces a bold mysticism to the centuries-old-stone.

New International Representation

Above image: scale rendering

Richard Erdman announces the commission of a new monumental work for Landau Fine Art of Montreal, Canada and Meggen, Switzerland. Landau Fine Art's "Only Master Works" collection is highly regarded worldwide for their assemblage of great masters such as Picasso, Dubuffet, Giacometti and Moore, to name a few. Now, Richard Erdman will debut as one of their living artists, whose work will stand among the leading artists of the 20th century.

Landau Fine Art, founded by Robert Landau, opened in Montreal in 1987, and is world renowned for its extraordinary collection, exhibitions, and publications. It has long been considered a prominent high-reaching gallery with a solid presence on the world stage and a reputation for excellence - securing an exclusive, one-of-kind arsenal of master works. Robert Landau and his wife emigrated to Switzerland in 2012 and are opening a gallery in Meggen.

Landau Fine Art made a connection with Erdman's work at the prestigious international art fair Art Basel in Miami, and the relationship between and Artist and Gallery has grown from there. Erdman has been commissioned to create a sculpture for the entrance of the new location in Meggen, which is due to open in the spring of this year. "It is a privilege to be working with Landau Fine Art," says Erdman, "Landau is a discriminating dealer, and it is a great pleasure to know as an artist that he recognizes the merit of my work." Landau Fine Art will represent Erdman's sculpture internationally at such fine art fairs as Art Basel, Art Basel Miami, and TEFAF MAASTRICT.

The eight-foot sculpture, Sentinel, will be a bit of a departure for Richard, who is known for his sinuous, water and wave inspired forms. The curves he is most famous for, are taking a straighter path, quite literally. This piece will have an architectural leaning - it is vertical in nature and will stand as the sentinel to the Swiss Alps while also reflecting the placidity of nearby Lake Lucerne.

An Adventurous Exploration of a New Material

Above image: scale rendering

In the life and career as an artist, few things are more inspirational and exciting than the decision to experiment with a new and arduous material such as course-grained igneous rock. Richard Erdman announces a new commission in Brazilian Blue Granite, to be completed for a private collection in Lucerne, Switzerland.

This exotic material is typically used within the context of simple, small-scale architectural projects, due to its high cost as well as the skilled artistry required to carve it. Erdman explains, "It's an intimidating medium, but I had been circling it for years. Once the form for Blu Fleur, the title of the piece, had materialized, I knew that it could only be carved from Brazilian Blue Granite."

Taking on this extraordinarily complex stone was bold, but to go as far as to create a sculpture eight feet in height from this material is positively audacious! Blu Fleur will be carved from a 12-ton block of Brazilian Blue Granite, and will be the largest sculpture in the world carved from this material, when complete. Erdman is no stranger to risky, monumental works - his sculpture Passage, found in the permanent collection of the Donald M. Kendall Sculpture Gardens at PepsiCo, is the largest in the world carved from a single block of Italian Travertine.

Blu Fleur is elegant yet powerful; it emulates water bursting, a frozen stone arcing upward and outward, capturing the movement of water. Erdman is known world-wide for his sculptures that sit, appearing to float on water; Grande Eleos, Crescendo, and Cuore Rosa are a few examples of the way in which he is able to unite stone upon water. "What I love about this piece is that it allows me the opportunity to move from marrying stone and water to creating a piece that actually emulates water. This piece feels more active, more alive, and the body of the Brazilian Blue Granite looks as though there is an active flow beneath its surface."

Blu Fleur will be completed at the Artist's studio in Carrara, Italy.

Interview with Richard Erdman in Destination Vermont

photo // Madeleine Erdman

The marble quarries in Dorset, Vermont are the oldest in America. Richard Erdman made a playground of these jutting landscapes when he was a child; today, Erdman is a prolific Vermont sculptor. He flirts between marble and bronze mediums, letting each piece whisper its story before making his mark. Internationally commissioned, his art reaches out across the globe. In the last six years, Erdman has planted pieces in 50 countries with 12 major commissions. Erdman’s work embodies the duality of one who venerates both Michelangelo and Robert Frost. Following the logic and landscape of these titans, Erdman moves between his studios in Williston and Carrara, Italy.

What was it like growing up in Vermont’s natural landscape?

I was always inspired as a kid; although I never thought that the forms from the quarry would seep into my life. Carving is what I do and the stone was great fodder for a young, budding sculptor. Besides that, nature reminds me of my mortality. It’s constantly regenerating and as sure as a birthday. The whole quarry is a sculpture but as a kid growing up in the 70s, it was a rich playground. I still take those feelings of leaping off a ledge, and now I make a sculpture out of them, out of my love for the moment.

Where do your ties to the University of Vermont stem from?

I majored in sculpture at UVM. I took all of the prerequisites before my sculpture classes. It was like saving the best for last—like saving room for dessert. When they commissioned “Primavera,” I was happy to give back to the place where I was inspired to create and think. I really appreciated the teaching style because they let you play around with the tools. They let you make mistakes.

What drew you to Italy?

Vermonters are surrounded by natural art—the Adirondack Mountains are on one side and the Green Mountains frame the other. The Apuan Alps in Italy look like snow. Vermont marble really looks like sugar in comparison. But traveling from Vermont to I taly and back is really almost one in the same, just in a different language. I work with a team of four people in Carrara who understand how to collaborate—a composer can’t play all the instruments.

How do you decide on a medium?

It’s an aesthetic choice, and it’s really just a feeling. Some pieces I do in bronze and stone—the same sculpture but they’re two different entities. I work with very simple materials because they are the most alive. Stone’s shape is unique. It’s open, fluid, and full of life. With bronze, there is no limit. It’s all about creating something with its own life, like giving birth. You get the idea that with bronze it will live forever.

Can you pinpoint one of your favoritepieces?

“Passage,” which was commissioned for the PepsiCo Gardens in 1985 was the highest honor. It’s inspired by nature—by the Grand Canyon, by the push of the Vermont mountains. It’s expanding and contracting. What I love about travertine is the compact energy. It tells a story in its very strata. When I sculpt, I’m trying to open up the movement and immortalize it. The sculpture sends you one way and then sends you back in the other.

International Commission from Seoul, Korea

Artist Richard Erdman announces a major public art commission from Seoul, South Korea. This is the first installation in South Korea for Richard Erdman, who has been commissioned by that country’s most prominent upscale fashion company, Handsome Fashion, Inc., to create “Volante” a large-scale work carved from Carrara marble. Upon completion, the sculpture will weigh more than 2,000 pounds and measure more than six feet tall and seven and one-half feet in length - a stunning, shapely work in white marble, reminiscent of a winged form. The artwork will be installed in the central outdoor courtyard at the company’s facility in Busan, Korea overlooking the Sea of Japan. Key to the concept of Erdman’s work will be the installation of the sculpture; it will be poised above a reflecting pool, bringing together the elements of air, water and earth in a dramatic vista setting.

Erdman’s works, a modern adaptation of classical marble and bronze sculpture, are known for their grace and fluidity – the elegant, flowing shapes of his work seemingly defy the solid, dense, cold nature of the stone from which they are carved. “Volante” appears as an abstract winged form alighting on water – a graceful marriage of water and stone. “We arrived at the selection of the material and the setting together – my work resonated with the company leadership because it reflected the modern aesthetic of their fashion and design business, as well as representing the ancient mythological themes of water, air and stone.” Says Erdman from his studio in Williston, VT. “The material came first, and the art followed.” Erdman also admits that he sees this piece as homage to his own mentors and influences, as well as a way to honor the combination of the Korean and American cultures. “Volante expresses freedom and a move toward modernity, while at the same time, it is respectful of the natural world and its elements. While the sculpture is a passionate, soaring piece, it is also a humble, quiet tribute to a culture that has a history that stretches back millennia.”

Passage: A Richard Erdman Sculpture

In 1985 PepsiCo commissioned Erdman to create the monumental Passage, which stands like a sentinel at the entrance to the esteemed Donald M. Kendall sculpture gardens at PepsiCo, considered to be the finest collection of 20th century outdoor sculpture. Carved from a massive 450 ton block of travertine, the 25 by 16 foot Passage is the largest sculpture in the world carved from a single block of marble. In celebration of the 25 year anniversary since Passage was installed at PepsiCo, we will revisit Director and Cinematographer Albert van der Wildt's recording of Richard Erdman's creation of Passage.

Commission of Public Artwork by the Parkside Capital Land Trust of Houston, TX

Vermont artist Richard Erdman has been selected to produce “Crescendo” a massive sculpture for a new public park to be built by the Parkside Capital Land Trust and in Houston, TX. The commissioning of this piece represents an ongoing commitment to bring art into public spaces and private development projects. A monumental work more than nine feet high and 11 feet long upon completion, “Crescendo” will be sculpted from a massive 30-ton block of grey with white veining Italian Bardiglio marble from the artists quarry in Carrarra, Italy. “Crescendo” will be positioned above a pool of water where it will appear as a graceful creature about to alight on the surface of the water.

Known for his forward-thinking modern adaptations of classical marble sculpture in graceful, flowing designs, Richard Erdman’s massive stone sculptures of thousands of pounds defy gravity, bringing warmth and light to their resilient stone bodies. According to Richard Erdman, “ What we loved about “Crescendo” for this project was the prehistoric feeling of the shape of the work. To me, this stone has the feel of a dinosaur hip.” Smiling, he adds, “It represents the best qualities of Texas, modernity, grace, strength and solidity as well as a nod to the ancient earth under their feet. They’re proud of those things.” Some who have seen the curving lines of this sculpture see a spiritual, uplifting theme captured in the carving – the wings of a bird in flight. Erdman adds, “It’s simple and happy and has this strong upward movement; a tranquil reminder that nature underlies every place and every city.”

Richard Erdman is an internationally renowned sculptor who creates soaring sculptural works of soft lineal forms and curves in bronze and stone in the abstract mode. His career stretches over three decades. Richard’s work has been shown in more than 150 solo and group exhibitions throughout North America, Europe and Asia. He has more than 100 commissioned works in museums, public, and corporate collections and his work is held in private collections in 50 countries.

As a child, Richard Erdman grew up near the oldest marble quarry in America, in East Dorset, VT. Not surprisingly, these early experiences greatly influenced this sculptor’s life and work. He admired the shape and nature of the stones themselves, wondering at the weather-beaten waves, layers and textures within the stone, but he also engaged his passion for his own joyous physicality and risk-taking by challenging himself to climb to new heights and leap from the sides of the quarry into the water below. These two elements - a love of the medium, and an intimate understanding of the physicality and nature of space, strength and grace inform his work even today.

Richard’s adaptability and his intimate understanding of the materials with which he sculpts have led to the creation of a wide-ranging body of work which encompasses intimate maquettes to massive monumental works. Perhaps his best-known public work is “Passage”, a colossal Italian travertine sculpture in the permanent collection of the Donald M. Kendall Sculpture Gardens at PepsiCo in Purchase, NY. “Passage” is the largest existing sculpture carved from a single piece of Italian travertine in the world. Richard Erdman lives in Williston, VT and divides his time between his studios in Vermont and Carrera, Italy.

Galerie Artziwna in Vienna Austria Announces Collaboration and Exhibition with Richard Erdman

American sculptor Richard Erdman announces new representation and exhibition with Galerie Artziwna in Vienna, Austria. Richard Erdman is the only American artist represented by this premiere international gallery, and this is his first major exhibition of his sculpture in Austria. Richard Erdman was selected as the gallery’s sole American sculptor represented because “he provides a strong unique presence, he represents the interests and aesthetic of the gallery, and he has a solid reputation as a preeminent American artist”. Erdman’s sculptures in bronze and marble blend classical and modern elements gracefully. For his part, Richard Erdman is delighted to be involved with the gallery and to contribute to the history of art in Vienna. “Stone, marble and bronze are essential historic elements in the city of Vienna and throughout Europe – the city is so full of human, geographic and cultural history.” He adds, “It is an honor to play a part in the history of this material, of that continuum and tradition working with stone and bronze in an imaginative, contemporary, and I think, romantic way.”

Richard’s adaptability and his intimate understanding of the materials with which he sculpts have led to the creation of a wide-ranging body of work which encompasses intimate maquette to grandly sized indoor and outdoor installations as well as massive monumental works. Richard Erdman is a native Vermonter who lives in Williston, VT and divides his time between his studios in Vermont and Carrera, Italy.

Galerie Artziwna is located in Innere Stadt, the Old Town district of Vienna, the cultural and historical center of the city that is home to arts institutions such as The Albertina, the Vienna Opera House and Austrian National Theater, Hofburg Palace, beautifully preserved churches and cathedral, and scores of art galleries, palais, businesses and banking institutions.

Established in a centuries old bank building on Herrengasse and tucked in among the famous and elegant noble palais of Vienna, Galerie Artziwna is known for its international stable of artists and works from the 20th century and modern era. Works and artists represented by the gallery include those of painters Alfred Kornberger and Sinasi Bozatli and Leopold Gazer as well as sculptors Fritz Wotruba, Jahannes Avanidis, and Oscar Hofinger. Galerie Artziwna also represents Old Masters paintings and works of historical importance.

Monumental Sculpture Featured in Art in America

Toulouse, Edition 2/4, is currently featured in the December 2011 issue of Art in America. The form’s presence is sweeping, at 90” tall, a soft green patina set against a crisp blue sky. The Ad is promoting an upcoming show at Madison Gallery, located in La Jolla, California.

The exhibition, entitled “Three Decades of Sculpture”, will feature various works of Erdman’s that reflect his evolution as an artist throughout the years. The gallery will display these works from December 23, 2011, to January 31, 2012. At the forefront, is Toulouse.

Cast in bronze and measuring 90" H x 96" x 88", Toulouse embodies a lightness of movement unlike any other. The Artist’s love of open and solid forms speaks boldly as the sculpture cannot help but invite the viewer to engage in a tactile way. “Toulouse draws the participant in,” the Artist says. “One sees this sculpture and is called to interact with it.” The piece invites you to graze your hand along the flow of soft curves of smooth bronze, duck beneath it, and become one with the multidimensional form.

Toulouse is the culmination of many years of the Artists varied interests. Constantly striving to find balance in a sea of seemingly contradicting forces—solid and liquid, hot and cold, active and still—this magnificent sculpture portrays the Artist’s multifaceted talent. 1,200 pounds and a large-scale work, qualities of the earthy, organic bronze brings a sense of liquidity to the otherwise solid mass. The grandiose, dance-like curves spark curiosity, tranquility, and warmth.

The smaller model for Toulouse is on display at Madison Gallery.

Richard Erdman Installs Momenta in Zurich, Switzerland

Richard Erdman’s fanciful bronze sculpture Momenta was installed in the private residence of an international collector in Zurich, Switzerland. The second in an edition limited to two, Momenta measures 34” H x 44” W. Works such as these can take many months to prepare, from initial plaster models to final casting and installation. Well worth the wait to discerning collectors.

Of working in bronze, the artist has said of this favored material, “Bronze is a molten material...the very fact that it is a liquid, it becomes closer to us, because we are liquid creatures...you just get the feeling that it is going to be here forever, which it is, and, in fact, the flavor of the earth comes out in bronze.”

Richard Erdman installs Sculpture at Belmont Group's World Headquarters, Dallas, TX

Richard Erdman has installed a commissioned marble sculpture, Suonare Grande, in the central courtyard of the newly completed world headquarters for Belmont Group in Dallas, TX. Retained by CEO John Eulich, Erdman carved the massive eight-foot tall sculpture from a one-ton block of white Carrara marble. Sitting atop a three-foot high octagonal granite plinth, the sculpture brings an air of modernity and graceful distinction to the courtyard of the classical, European-inspired architecture of the newly completed headquarters building. The grace of the piece, which appears almost to float upon its pedestal, contrasts magnificently against the strength and nature of the stone itself.

American Artist Richard Erdman Lichtenstein Exhibition Featured in Press

Pictured here with Gallerist Kurt Prantl, Erdman receives high praise for his exhibition with German abstract painter Friedrich Karl Gotsch (1900-1984) at Galerie am Lindenplatz. The work of the two artist marries well, providing a contemplative, if abstract, reflection of the beauty and form found in the natural world. According to Prantl, Richard Erdman’s 17 sculptures at the gallery demonstrate “an interrelation between graceful and dynamic movements." Regarding the selection of these two artists for exhibition together, he opined that the work of the two artists arranged together “celebrate the strong experience of the classical modern trend.”

Vermont artist Richard Erdman’s 2011 exhibition at Galerie am Lindenplatz, Vaduz, Liechtenstein is featured in articles in “Volksblatt” and the “Liechtensteiner Vaterland.” Vaduz is the capital of Liechtenstein, and a cultural destination in Europe, as both the National Art Gallery (a museum of modern and contemporary art) and the National Museum (featured permanent and rotating exhibits on the cultural history of the nation) are located in the city, as are numerous galleries and art spaces.

The exhibition dates are March 18 to May 17, 2011.

ART Research Enterprises casts Richard Erdman’s Toulouse for the Burlington, VT Marriott Hotel.

Richard Erdman has announced his collaboration with ART Enterprises to bring Toulouse, one of his bronze sculptures, to life. Pictured here is the patination process of the 71/2-foot sculpture. When asked about casting bronze sculpture, Erdman has maintained that he greatly enjoys each of the stages, but “the final patina stage is really exciting, because that is when you apply the chemicals that give the sculpture its final life. It’s like painting.”

Toulouse is installed at the entrance to the Marriott Hotel in Burlington, VT.

Marriott Hotel Commissions Two Sculptures from Artist Richard Erdman

Commissions are an honor for every artist, and internationally known sculptor Richard Erdman is no exception, but an exceptional honor came to Erdman when the Marriott Hotel on the Lake Champlain waterfront in his home state of Vermont commissioned not one, but two of his bronze sculptures. The two substantive sculptures, Toulouse and Form Reclining will grace the entrance and garden plaza of the hotels recent expansion.

Toulouse at 71/2-feet tall, is a striking focal point of the hotel’s main entrance. The sculpture’s lively arched form welcomes visitors to the hotel and imaginatively provides a shapely echo of the spectacular natural mountain and lake vistas beyond.

In the garden plaza, the 51/2-foot high Form Reclining offers a thoughtful, recumbent pose. The artist hopes that guests will find it possible to discover a feeling of contemplative harmony between his work and the splendid natural beauty that surrounds them.

The soft, lineal forms and curves of both sculptures dance in joyful counterpoint to the modern, sharp architecture of the building itself, providing a delightful environment for guests to enjoy.

These photographs feature Toulouse in progress and in the final installation.
